Opportunities @ the extreme plasma physics team

The epp team welcomes students at several stages to work with us Post Doctoral fellows | PhD students | MSc students | Internships | International MSc and Internships.
We are always happy to talk with interested undergraduate and graduate students at any time. Check the research projects of our team members, as well as the alumni webpage to learn about that we do.
Post doctoral fellows
Contact Luís O. Silva with a resumé, a letter with your research interests, and the name of three referees that we can contact to obtain further informations about you. If we can identify opportunities that fit your profile we will contact you. We usually sponsor and host Post-Doctoral Fellows funded by FCT, Fundação La Caixa, and Marie Curie grants.
PhD students
We are always looking for bright, young, and highly motivated students that wish to pursue a PhD degree, with a background in Physics, Physics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
If you fit this profile, and you want to join or to visit for a long period our team to work on plasma theory and simulations, send an email to Luís O. Silva with a resumé, a letter with your research interests, and the name of three referees that we can contact to obtain further informations about you.
You should also apply to the IPFN Doctoral Program Applause, which funds several PhD student positions per year, stating specifically that you wish to work at GoLP on the epp team.
IST MSc students
Look up the advertised thesis subjects in the MEFT webpage or get in touch with a particular potential supervisor of the epp team. Explore our website for more information about what we do.
In some cases, we may be able to offer a fellowship (Initiation to Research) depending on your CV, abilities, commitment, and ongoing projects. Note that this involves spending a significant amount of your weekly schedule at GoLP working with the epp team (we prefer in person work and we provide a workspace for MSc students funded by fellowships).
- You are in the 1st or 2nd year of the MSc (the earlier you start the better), and with an expected final average >= 17/20
- You can spare at least 15-20 hours per week on the placement/MSc work program (more in the case of a fellowship)
- You have a strong interest in theoretical and/or computational physics and you have a compatible know-how
- You are considering pursuing a PhD degree or seeking a job related to computational and theoretical physics
Internships
GoLP opens periodic calls for undergraduate research placements (“estágios”), normally at the beginning of a semester. Calls occur twice per year (at start of P2 and P4). Please find information about the internship program in the GoLP website.
These are widely advertised, and they are your opportunity to enroll to work with us. These placements last for a minimum of 6 months, and can be extended or evolve into an MSc Thesis (or can also give rise to a PIC1 project) depending on mutual interest and performance. We do not provide fellowships (“bolsas”) for this kind of placements (“estágios”).
- You are in the 3rd of the Licenciatura or the 1st year of the MSc, only a few or, preferably, no courses left behind, and with an average >= 16/20 marks
- You can spare at least 3-4 hours per week to the placement work program
- You have a strong interest in theoretical and/or computational physics and you have a compatible know-how
- You are motivated, willing to learn and to work in a team
- You are looking for an opportunity to start working in the “real world” of research
MSc thesis and Internships for students not enrolled at IST
If you fit the profile we are looking for (see previous entries), we are happy to welcome you in our team, depending on your CV and time/resources availability. Usually we cannot provide financial support except for truly outstanding students that intend to join our team in the future as PhD students.
